Canadian Student Summit on Aerospace, and T-Shirt Contest

Hey Aeros,

We've got some exciting things happening in the next few weeks. Here's the scoop:

  1. Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute (CASI) Ryerson Branch is hosting the 2013 Canadian Student Summit on Aerospace at Ryerson. The CSSA is a two-day summit with a plant tour to UTC Aerospace Systems on Friday, January 25th and a day long conference on Saturday, December 26th followed by a wine and cheese networking event. You'll get a chance to meet professionals from the aerospace industry and hear about their experiences. Speakers at the conference include Canadian astronaut Bjarni Tryggvason, Cameron Robertson from Aerovelo Inc., Eric Choi from Aeroscribe Consulting and many more. Come out and network with some amazing people from the industry and enjoy their presentations. Food and refreshments will be provided. Usethe following link for more information and Registartion: http://www.casi.ca/cdn-student-summit-on-aerospace

  2. The t-shirt slogan contest continues! The ACU is looking for a witty, sassy, or just plain clever phrase to print on our upcoming batch of aero t-shirts, but we need your help to do it. The grand prize for the winning slogan is a complementary aero t-shirt, and a pair of movie tickets, so don't delay. Get your slogan in now! Our contest is ending this Friday, January 25.

  3. Last but not least, if you haven't yet picked up all your text books, or still have some lying around that you need to sell, check out RyeAds.com. It's a Ryerson-only classifieds site dedicated to helping you save (and earn) money by providing an easy way to buy and sell used textbooks, furniture, electronics, and whatever else you got in your closet. Check it out, and save some cash!

Kickin' Off a New Term and a New Year

Welcome back Aeros!

Hope you enjoyed your well-deserved break, and that you had ample time to get some solid R&R. Sadly, the break is over, but that doesn't mean we won't have a good time. We've got a lot of really exciting things brewing for this term. For now, please peruse a few announcements to start us off:
  1. T-Shirt Slogan Contest - You gave us our new logo, now we want to put it on a shirt, but not by itself... We need you to rack your busy brains for a catchy new phrase or slogan to slap on there too! So take a minute, and send us your witty ideas. Finalists will be voted on by you and your peers, and the winner will receive a juicy prize! (Enter below)

  2. Course feedback is really important, that's why we've created an Any-Time Course Feedback Form. If there is something about your classes/tutorials/labs that you notice early on is just not working well, we strongly encourage you to fill out the feedback form so that we can take your concerns to the people in charge of your course so that these issues can be fixed ASAP.

  3. RyeAds.com - If you're looking for a place to buy and sell textbooks, check out our new partner, RyeAds.com. It's a student-run classified ads website devoted to Ryerson students and staff. It's free to use, and a great alternative to book stores (which take a cut of your asking price), and other classified sites (which are targeted to Ryerson students). And it's now sponsored by the ACU, so check it out, and sell some books!

End of Term Celebration, New Logo, and Thank You!

Hey Aeros,

It's been a while since you've heard from us, and given the time of year, we won't take up too much of your time. But there are three important things we wanted to make you aware of.

  1. We are planning an end-of-term/exams celebration! The location is TBA, but it will be held the evening of Friday, December 14 - the last weekday of exams. It will be around campus too, so book off your calendars and tell your friends! Once we've decided on a nearby location, we'll make a reservation and let you all know about it!
  2. This announcement is a bit delayed, but the winner of October's Logo Contest is Aamir Abidi. You can now see the logo proudly addorning our website, Facebook page, Twitter profile, and we even had some sweet buttons made up! So congratulations to Aamir, and thank you to everyone who entered the contest and took the time to vote.

  3. For those who weren't aware, last week we held an orientation for First-Year Aeros. We had Drs. Walsh, Lassaline, Kumar, and Xi give brief talks about topics ranging from their research, involvement in the department, and the opportunities available to incoming students. We also had representatives from a whole wackload of student teams and clubs. And on top of all that, attendees enjoyed some cool tote bags, refreshments, and some entertaining, professor-related trivia. It was a very successful event, so we'd just like to thank everyone who made it possible: including our Aero faculty, support staff, and 2nd year volunteers who helped us set up.

That's all for now Aeros. We'll be in touch soon with more details on our Post-Exam party for Friday the 14th!

Good luck on those finals!

Book Exchange & Course Feedback

We've all seen those course surveys at the end of the term that are used by profs to make improvements to their courses and get useful feedback for next term. But what if you could help improve a course while you're taking it?

Introducing ACU's new Course Feedback From! Adrian, your Internal/Academic Rep, has set up an online form where you can submit your feedback, suggestions, criticisms, and compliments for any of your Aero courses. Adrian's job is to keep an open and productive dialogue between you and your faculty. With this form, he'll be able to collect your thoughts, and relay them to our faculty to effect real and timely change. Vive la revolution!

The Book Exchange is the brainchild of Elio (your VP). The idea here is to make it easy for all of us to sell the books we're done with, and find the books we need every term. To streamline the process, we'd like you to fill out the form below if you have a book you'd like to get rid of next term. Then we'll compile a list of all the books that are being offered so everyone can get an idea of what's available. At the beginning of next term, we'll make arrangements for a place that buyers and sellers can meet together to make the exchange super easy. We haven't finalized the end-details yet, for now we're just collecting information.

Professor Nominations

Professor teaching award nominations are off to a great start. We've already received over two-dozen nominations, and we're getting more every day. It's great to see that so many of you appreciate the hard work that our professors do for us.

If you've been thinking of nominating a professor, do it this weekend, because the deadline for the real applications is Nov 1! We're going to start phase 2 of this process on Monday, which will involve writing a formal nomination letter for one(some) of the nominated professors. More to come later!

Prof. Nominations, Dusk Till Dawn & Logo Contest PRIZES!

You may have heard some murmurs about professor awards and nominations. Essentially, we know there are some professors that do an outstanding job - so why not give a little credit where credit's due? We're making it easy too. If you have a professor in mind that's gone above and beyond the call of duty, just click here to nominate your professor of choice. We'll make sure your nomination gets to the right place!

Dusk Till Dawn is the offical Halloween pub night sponsored by RSU, your very own ACU, and a bunch of other course unions. It's happening next Wednesday, on Halloween night, starting at 10pm at the Ram in the Rye. There will be prizes, special drinks, and an all-around gangnam-style time. So dance/drink off that post-midterm stress and join the party! (see the poster below for more details)

The ACU logo contest is ongoing, and we're still getting more entries. The contest ends October 30 (day before the party), so if you've got an idea brewing, flesh it out and send it in before it's too late!
Oh, and the logo contest prizes we mentioned? Here they are:
  • Free ACU T-Shirt with the logo you designed
  • A pair of movie tickets
  • And a $10 One Card gift card, good anywhere on campus!
If that ain't motivation, I don't know what is!
Plus, winners will be chosen by popular online vote, from a short-list of three entries. So work hard on those designs if you want them to make the cut!

We've also been getting a TON of submissions for the Test Bank. So many in fact that we're having trouble finding time to post them! But don't worry, your submissions are appreciated, and will be posted shortly.
If you're still thinking of submitting some midterms/finals to the Test Bank, please do so. Send them to aerocu@ryerson.ca, or n2budd@ryerson.ca.

As always, you can keep tabs on us at our site (aerocu.jimdo.com), on Facebook, or on Twitter (twitter.com/ryersonacu).

See you at the party!

Halloween Party!

Halloween (AKA Hallowe'en to some) is only two weeks away. We know everyone's got midterms right now, so we wanted to offer a light at the end of the tunnel.

On October 31, your ACU, in partnership with the RSU, will be hosting a super-wicked-awesome-fantabulous-rock-solid party at Ram in the Rye!

Details are still being fleshed out, but we know it's happening, and we know you want to be there to blow off some post-midterm steam. So mark it off in your calendars and get stoked! More details to follow soon.

A few other reminders:

  • Our website now houses 35 finals and midterms for your studying pleasure. Why not clean out your desks and send in a few to contribute to the cause? Practice exams for all!
  • The ACU doesn't have a logo! We've already received a few entries for the logo contest, so hurry up and send one in if you're thinking about it. Contest ends October 30, and the prize will be announced soon. Send your entries to aerocu@ryerson.ca
  • ACU t-shirts are still on sale in the ACU office for only $10! Check them out, and then drop by our office to pick yours up. Here's our office hours so you know when to stop by.

And as always, you can keep up to date with us through our website (aerocu.jimdo.com), our Facebook page, or our Twitter handle, @RyersonACU.

Good luck on those midterms!

While we know us Aeros love (have to) spend hours on equations, calculations, reports, and all that other fun (mandatory) stuff, we also know that we all have a creative side too.

So go ahead, erase that back-of-the-envelope calculation, and turn it into a back-of-the-envelope logo idea! Take your best shot at designing the ACU's new logo, and you could find yourself endowed with a pretty wicked prize (TBA).

When you've got one ready, send it to aerocu@ryerson.ca for consideration!

ACU Website - New and Improved

Welcome to the brand new Aerospace Course Union website!

Not only has the site been updated more recently than 2006, but it's also going to house a lot of really useful information for all you Aeros out there.

  • Along the side you'll find our Twitter feed and a link to our Facebook Group.

  • You'll find contact information for each executive member of the ACU under Your ACU (as well as a copy of our constitution).

  • Our office hours and other special dates are under... you guessed it: Important Dates

  • Forums is a great place to collaborate with your fellow Aeros - especially for those classed that don't have Blackboard discussion pages.

  • Test Bank is our new repository of old tests! Please email me with an attachment of any tests you have to contribute to the cause! Your fellow Aeros will thank you, and may return the favour by adding some of their own.
